The owners came to the architect with several requests. Their family with 3 active teenagers had outgrown the existing house and they needed a larger kitchen, a family room, a mudroom large enough for laundry and sports equipment and an additional bedroom.
The front of the house had very little character in a neighborhood of architecturally significant older homes. Lastly, the family wanted to incorporate a swimming pool that offered them complete privacy, with a terrace and outdoor fireplace.
The design makes use of a portion of the existing garage footprint to create a new and larger front entrance space and a mudroom off of the entry corridor. The design also provides a large kitchen with an island that is open to a family room.
The family room includes a large seating area, fireplace, a window seat at the sunny south wall, and a separate alcove for dining. Terrace doors open from the family room onto the pool terrace. On the second floor, there is a new bedroom and bath with shower, soaking tub and double sinks.
A new front porch and front dormers give the front façade a presence on the street.
